John F. Kennedy (1917–63) was the second son of the Boston millionaire and US ambassador to Britain Joseph Kennedy. After commanding a torpedo boat in the Pacific during the Second World War he entered Congress as a Democrat in 1946 and was elected a senator for his native Massachusetts six years later. In 1960 he defeated Richard Nixon to become the first Catholic president, and the youngest in American history. His youth, good looks and charisma inspired a new spirit of hope and enthusiasm amongst Americans, particularly the young. Kennedy’s domestic programme of social and civil rights reforms met opposition in Congress, but his calm handling of the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962 averted a nuclear conflict and brought him worldwide praise.
